　羽毛は黒色で、翼に白い斑紋がある。頭部や首は羽毛がなく、皮膚の色はオスは赤色、メスは黒色と別れる。

　オスには頭部にトサカ状の突起があり、これは気分や体温によって変化する。また、オスには首周りに白い環があるのも特徴だ。
