だが混獲の果てに、コガシラネズミイルカは2014年には60頭までに個体数が激減。その後、2017年には30頭のみ、去年は15頭が確認され、今年はわずか10頭未満しか生存していないことが判明している。
メキシコとカリフォルニア州の自然保護団体は、コガシラネズミイルカの絶滅をなんとか防ごうと日々尽力しているが、見通しは暗い。
